PADANG BESAR: A huge consignment of slaughtered chickens and ducks bearing the Halal logo for export to Thailand was held up here after the authorities discovered the poultry were not slaughtered according to Islamic principles.
Perlis Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) commander Assistant Superintendent Zakaria Abdul Rahman said the team on duty at a roadblock at KM24 Jalan Ulu Pauh – Padang Besar, in Perlis checked a lorry carrying 146 boxes of slaughtered chicken, 253 boxes of chicken liver and 40 sacks of ducks.
Zakaria said the team found the meat which were packed in boxes and sacks bearing the halal logo, was not slaughtered according to the Islamic way.
Zakaria added an officer from the state Religious Department who was called to assist, confirmed there was only a pierced mark at the neck of the chicken and the duck.
The lorry and his attendant, aged 30 and 29, were later detained at the Chuping UPP office for investigation into misusing the halal logo.
